Sal Gugino is a longtime Nevada resident, having first moved to Las Vegas in 1961. A graduate of the Pre-Law, Political Science program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Sal taught history and government at Western High School prior to attending the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, California. During his law school education, Sal served as the law clerk for the U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada from 1978 until 1980, and was the President of the Student Bar Association and Graduation Speaker in 1981 when he received his Juris Doctorate degree from McGeorge.
Sal immediately began private practice as an associate with Cromer, Barker, Gillock & Rawlings, and as a partner in this firm’s immediate predecessor, Rawlings, Olson & Cannon. During the past thirty-three (33) years, Sal has primarily handled insurance defense, insurance coverage, workers’ compensation, employment law and general business matters for hotels, casinos, governmental entities, insurance companies and other management clients. Sal has been involved in three (3) major complex litigation cases, representing the MGM Grand and Hilton Hotels in their fire cases, and several insurance companies (Home, Aetna, CNA, Continental, Lloyds and Sun Insurance of New York) in the ammonium perchlorate explosion at the Pepcon facility in Henderson, Nevada on May 4, 1988. Sal has developed an emphasis in the area of employment law, defending his clients against lawsuits based upon Title VII and other federal/state employment laws, including sexual harassment, sexual discrimination, gender bias, age discrimination, and race discrimination matters. Sal has also handled numerous other employer-related matters, such as unemployment compensation, workers’ compensation, wage and hour disputes, and actions under the Americans With Disabilities Act (“ADA”) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (“FMLA”). Sal is an experienced mediator and arbitrator, and serves as a Supreme Court Settlement Judge, a Short Trial “Pro-Tem” Judge and as a mediator and arbitrator for the Court Annexed Arbitration Program for the Eighth Judicial District Court.
In addition to being a private practitioner, Sal Gugino served for twelve (12) years as a member and Chairman of the Local Government Employee-Management Relations Board (“EMRB”), hearing public sector labor relations matters throughout the State of Nevada. A former President of the Clark County Bar Association, Sal Gugino is the editor and co-author of the Nevada Civil Practice Manual, Chapter 2, on “Judges and Attorneys,” published by Lexis/Nexis. In 2013, Sal was rated as a “Top Lawyer” by Vegas, Inc. Magazine. Since 2005, Sal has been rated as an “A-V” attorney by Martindale-Hubbell, and has been listed in two editions of Who’s Who. Sal is the 2003 recipient of the Justinian Award by the Nevada Italian-American Attorney’s Association.
